Some of the Most Dangerous Used Vehicles on the Road Today At 6:26 a.m., the CHP got reports that a solo vehicle had spun out and was facing the wrong way, blocking the No. 1 lane. The CHP now says at least two vehicles are disabled in the center divider, blocking the carpool and No. 1 lane. Two other vehicles are involved and police say smoke is coming from one. An ambulance and tow trucks have been called to the scene. The CHP issued a SigAlert to clean up the mess. Traffic is backed up to near the 91 freeway.

Most people who seek out a used vehicle do so to save money or to avoid a car payment altogether. You might seek out a reputable dealer who specializes in certified previously owned vehicles rather than pick up any old junk that’s being hawked on somebody’s front lawn.

But one thing some used vehicle buyers fail to take into account is that used cars can be more dangerous than new vehicles, many of which feature high tech anti-crash systems. Keep in mind, if you do purchase certain used vehicles over that of new models, you will be placing yourself at risk of being in an auto accident, no matter how competent a driver you consider yourself to be.

The Barnes Firm injury attorneys, are quick to note that car accidents happen even to the safest, most careful, most aware drivers currently on the road. This holds true for drivers of used cars that are more dangerous than new models. It’s important to note that if you’ve been seriously injured in a major car accident at the fault of another driver, you should be compensated for your suffering and pain, and afforded the right to heal without financial strain.

But the point is not to get into an accident in the first place. However, that might not be possible by choosing the wrong used vehicle. That means doing your due diligence and properly researching the vehicles you are interested in.

According to one recent report, shoppers of used vehicles have much to consider. As a starting point, researchers recommend examining the lists of the most reliable and safe vehicle models that worked out positively for the previous owners. Even years after a new model is introduced into the marketplace, testing agencies such as Consumer Reports can reliably predict how it will continue to perform (or not perform) in the “real-world driving.”

But then comes the list of used vehicles you should avoid. If the vehicle you’re looking at has a record of trouble with electrical equipment or its transmission, you should naturally avoid purchasing it. You should examine the vehicle’s entire safety and collision record.

In fact, every four years, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) publishes a report that details the statistic on vehicular crashes. This allows you to see for yourself which models have claimed the most driver and passenger deaths in the U.S. Conversely, you can also find out which vehicles claimed none. This is necessary reading if you are currently in the market for a used car for yourself or a loved one.

All that said, here are just a few of the most deadly used vehicles presently on the road, according to IIHS.

The Chevy Camaro Coupe

This “muscle car” which offers up a lot of power behind the wheel, is said to have claimed 55 per million lives over the four-year period between 2011 and 2015. The deaths were said to have been split evenly between multi-car crashes and single vehicle crashes. Not the best used car to purchase for your teenage son or daughter.

The Ford Mustang Convertible

Ford Mustang convertibles typically have more fatalities that coupe models, or so states IIHS. But for the 2014 Mustang convertible which is still on the road today, there were an average of more than 60 deaths per million drivers.

80 percent of these crashes came from multi-vehicle collisions. It’s interesting to note that starting in 2015, the Mustang began to come equipped with advanced safety tech.

The Chevrolet Impala

While larger model sedans usually sport a better safety record than small cars, the 2014 Chevrolet Impala is said to be a dangerous vehicle that’s still on the road today. 60 drivers per million registered died from this model.

Despite a good crash-test score, two-thirds of the drivers died in multi-vehicle crashes. IIHS states that earlier Impala models are said to be even more dangerous.

The Nissan Titan

You might get a deceptive sensation of safety when driving in this big, bulky tank of a truck. But the truth of the matter is that the Nissan Titan short bed model has been “by far” one of the most deadly pickup trucks on the road for the past decade. IIHS data shows that the pickup’s lack of roof strength was a major factor in 73 deaths per million drivers.

Almost 85 percent of these wrecks were single-vehicle accidents, and half of those came from flips and roll-overs. This deadly combination of “inadequate roof strength” and a likelihood of rollover, makes the Nissan Titan one of the most dangerous vehicles presently on the road in 2021.
