How Different is the New Jeep Wrangler?
The Jeep Wrangler has been the leading off-roader for years. It is one of the few affordable SUVs that always comes as a 4×4 with off-road ready features. With the introduction of the Ford Bronco, Jeep has been stepping up its game to compete for the off-roading market.
Increased Technology
The Jeep Wrangler, like many trucks, was one of the last to receive modern dash or safety systems. However, the new Wrangler now has a touch screen on the most affordable Sport models with air conditioning. This Uconnect system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The larger touchscreen can be paired with a TrailCam. Jeep’s suite of crash avoidance systems is on the menu, ready to watch the front, sides and rear. Automatics are offered with adaptive cruise control.
More Engine Choices
Jeep has been using the same excellent 285-horsepower engine for some years now. However, with the Ford Bronco offering a better engine output, Jeep has really pushed in all directions to provide unique engine choices. To improve fuel economy, it now offers a 270-horsepower inline-four turbo that churns out 295 pound-feet of torque. The available EcoDiesel is known for its incredible 442 lb-ft of torque. The Rubicon offers a HEMI that cranks out 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.
Electric Models
The new Wrangler 4xe is the first electric Wrangler. This plug-in hybrid provides 21 miles of electric range. It earns 48 mpge with its combination of hybrid motors and a turbo-four engine. To serve off-roaders, Jeep has partnered with Electrify America to have Level 2 chargers at trailheads across the country.
Lightweight
Another Wrangler aspect that has been significantly changed is its curb weight. Jeep utilizes high strength aluminum for the doors, hood, fenders and some other components in place of heavy steel. The swing gate is made of magnesium alloy.
Used Wrangler Advantages and Disadvantages
If you shop used, you are looking at Wranglers that have retained more of their value than many of their competitors. This is due to the fact that they are extremely durable. It also speaks to their popularity. Obviously it comes down to calculating the car price you can afford.
Every used Jeep Wrangler has open air capability, proven performance, off-roading equipment, and a serious 4×4. You won’t find a front-wheel or rear-wheel Wrangler. Of course, you will have to find a used Wrangler Rubicon for the most advanced equipment.
A main disadvantage has been the fuel economy. That’s basically because Jeep chose to give the ute sufficient power for off-roading adventures.
Another disadvantage is the lack of safety or dash tech. Jeep was slower to add modern toys and safety features to the Wrangler. However, this is a surmountable problem
There are plenty of reasons to want a new Wrangler, especially the hybrid and electric choices. Fortunately, the used Wranglers are still a good buy if you want off-roading capability.
